Basingstoke Bluefins are Hampshire Masters County Champions!

22 members of the Basingstoke Bluefins Masters Squad travelled to Waterlooville on 6th June to compete at the Hampshire Masters & Seniors County Championships.  This is the largest Masters Squad ever to represent Bluefins with all swimmers earning valuable points for the team and individual competitions.  The squad entered 164 individual events between them as well as 10 relay teams.  Bluefins earned a huge 435 points to win the Hampshire Masters Cup ahead of a strong Winchester team who were in 2nd place with 342.5 points.  Overall, the team gained 43 gold medals and county titles, 44 silver medals and 29 bronze medals.

In the men’s individual competition two Bluefins finished in the top ten places – Spencer Turner in 6th and Dave Davenport in 7th out of 80 men.  In the women’s competition Michelle Matson narrowly missed out on 1st place by 3 points with Amy Cantelo (6th) and Rachel Campbell (8th) also finishing inside the top 10 out of 63 women.

Only gold was good enough for Dave Davenport – winning 7 races out of 7 and Noreen Wise winning 4 races out of 4!

There were many excellent performances and the entire team rose to the occasion. Some (of many) highlights were:

  • The first event, the 200m Freestyle, got the team off to an amazing start with all 12 Bluefins entrants claiming medals!  6 golds, 5 silvers and a bronze earned the team 41 points.
  • Brendan Giltinane, 24, broke a meet record in the 100m Butterfly.  Bluefins won a further 4 golds and 1 silver in this event.
  • In the relays Bluefins entered 5 teams competing over 3 age groups.  The 72+ years team of Michelle Matson, Aaron Boyd, Brendan Giltinane and Rachel Campbell claimed 2 silver medals with the other teams performing well against tough competition.

Coach Neil was on holiday taking a well deserved break, but still found time to send “motivational” messages to the team via e-mail and text!
