Calendar: British Gas ASA National Youth Championships

Date: 17-21 Jul 2012
Location: Ponds Forge, Sheffield

The British Gas ASA National Youth Championships take place at Ponds Forge, Sheffield from 17th to 21st July. John Slater has qualified for the 50, 100, 200 and 400 metres Freestyle and the 100m Butterfly and he will also take part in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay.

Saturday was the final day and John's only event was the 50m Freestyle. Seeded 13th John was 10th fastest after the heats swimming 25.01 to qualify for the semis.

A quarter of a second improvement in the semi-final - 24.76 but the other swimmers improved more and John finished 15th overall.

Friday was a busy day for John, starting out with the 200m Freestyle heats. Just under a second outside his entry time put him 20th in 1:58.85. He improved on this in the semi-final to 1:57.68 placing him 14th - up on his 18th seed based on entry time.

The second event was the 100m Butterfly. Another semi-final qualifing swim in the heats - 58.71 placing him 14th. But at the end of a long day he came in in 1:01.68 in the semi.

Sorry for the delay in updates. In the finals on Thursday night John was slightly outside his heat time for the 100m Freestyle in 53.08 putting him 9th.

This morning was time for the relay team to enter the pool. Sam Taylor swam first knocking over a quater of a second off his time at the regionals recording 2:06.24. John Slater went next knocking 4 seconds off his regional time swimming 1:56.18.

Third swimmer was James Down completing his leg in 2:06.63 and fourth Oliver Waldram in 2:04.97. The time overall of 8:14.02 placed the team 30th overall - an improvement on their 32nd seeding based on regional times.

In the semi-finals last night John swam just outside his heat time in 52.80 but he was still safely through to tonight's final in 8th place.

John Slater kicked off his championships yesterday with the 400m Freestyle. His time of 4:12.90 saw him 14th placed in his age group.

Later in the morning he went into the heats of the 100m Freestyle with an entry time of 52.49. Touching in 52.45 this put him 13th overall and qualified for the semi-finals.
